Tony sucks
[It's 1:30 in the morning and Carol finally has a chance to sleep. She's been up since five the previous morning and is more than ready for it. So, of course, just as she was getting ready to sleep, Tony had to call her and ask to come over. As annoyed as she was, she found herself unable to say no. So when Tony shows up she answers the door in her pajamas (a t shirt and a pair of cotton shorts), hair pulled up and displeased look on her face]
You so better appreciate this, Stark. Come in.
You so better appreciate this, Stark. Come in.
Why does Tony suck!?
I appreciate it. And I appreciate you not killing me for it. See? I brought you a present.
[He does enter her apartment, offering over the bag as he does.]
Reasons
What is it?
But Carol!
[He's maybe a little more upbeat than he should be about this, but it's Tony. He's happy to have the company. And he managed to get her ice cream! Surely she can forgive him some late night visiting?]
I didn't wake you up, did I?
no subject
[Ooh wait, ice cream. And it's not a terrible flavor! Tony's peace offering has been accepted. He shall survive this night]
Nah, I wasn't asleep yet. I was watching bad late night tv. Still too wired to sleep and then you called.
no subject
[He says that, but he's smiling like a cat might if it were capable to giving that expression. Tony knows he's being troublesome.]
Good. At least I'm only interrupting your bad TV schedule. You feeling okay? Haven't seen you lately and thought I'd check in.
no subject
[She's just going to keep all comments to herself and go into the kitchen for a spoon. Eating ice cream right out of the carton? Yes. Yes she is]
Yeah, fine. Been busy, you know? Things blowing up, crazy guys in crazy costumes being crazy...the usual. How've you been?
no subject
You ever think that maybe there's a problem with that being the usual?
[He's only partially kidding, because Carol would probably get bored if she didn't have things to punch. And they take care of the crazies pretty well, but sometimes Tony thinks it would be better if they didn't have to deal with those crazies at all.]
Good. Great. No giant robots destroying the city lately, so that's a plus. Corporate sabotage has gone out of style lately, though. I kind of miss it.
no subject
Well, yeah. Of course there's a problem. But what can you do? Such is life and other obnoxious sayings like that. You wanna sit?
[She starts heading into the living room, motioning for Tony to follow her] Most people would be happy that no one's trying to sabotage them, you know.
no subject
[The ice cream of course is just the prelude to soften the oncoming Tony Stark Time Carol will have to face. He knows what it's like to be around himself, and ice cream helps.
That probably says he's gearing up for something.]
You know, some people would say that the fact no one is trying to sabotage them now just means that they're preparing bigger problems to drop on them later. That's how this kind of thing works. There's always something coming.
no subject
That's probably true. But aren't we always preparing for the next big terrible thing? There's always something.
carol your face
[Tony's logic works well sometimes.]
To be honest, I think we could all use more fun time. You remember when protecting people was fun?
[Tony flops onto her couch pretty easily. Sorry, Carol, he is pretty good at making himself at home.]
Maybe this is a slump.
her face is perfect
Something tells me there's something you actually want to talk to me about. Spill.
it really is
[He tries for an innocent expression. The kind that asks how she could think he'd be coming to spill his thoughts to her, but the truth is hard to cover up. Tony only manages to hold that innocent look briefly before he sighs.]
Okay, okay. I just... thought maybe we could hang out. You know, like things used to be. I miss that.
[Maybe she doesn't really understand, but Tony has decided that it doesn't matter now. He just wants a little time to get that off his chest.]
I used to like doing this.
no subject
[Tony Stark always has some ulterior motive. Carol has learned this over the years she's known him. There's always something else. She goes quiet though as Tony speaks, taking another bite of her ice cream]
Things have been kind of crazy the last few years, haven't they? A lot's happened.
no subject
[The smile wavers slightly, held together by years of practice.]
That's one way to put it. It used to be easier. Wasn't it? I remember it being a lot easier to do good.
no subject
[She shrugs because Tony has a point. She's just never really thought about it before]
Yeah, I guess it was. But that was before, you know...before the Avengers broke up, before the whole Wanda thing, before the war and the Skrulls and all the other shit that happened. I guess everything's just happening on a bigger scale now.
no subject
That's never stopped us before. [He says us but mean me, something he's sure Carol already knows. But Tony smiles, brushing away the depressing note he had.]
What I mean is, shouldn't we get out and do more? I know I haven't exactly been team-friendly lately, but I was hoping you'd let me change that.
no subject
That's true. [If Tony Stark wants to do something, he will do it. Even if it's something stupid or difficult]
That depends. What're you thinking here, Tony?
no subject
Starting over. We haven't lost the drive, but I feel like we've lost our connection. Maybe it's time we get that back.
no subject
Because we tried that, remember? It started out okay and then...
no subject
[At least for a while. He can't necessarily quit, but maybe it's time to cut loose and start over. That's what Tony is good for, right?]
I was just thinking. You know... got restless and decided to go for a walk. In the air.
no subject
That's why I quit the Avengers for a while and didn't want to go back. But in the end, I guess I decided that I did a lot more good working with other people than I did on my own.
no subject
[He pauses, trying to find the words.]
Maybe I'm not. Doing more good, I mean.
no subject
[She goes quiet again, considering what he says. While she doesn't necessarily think that's true, she gets where she's coming from. She's been there, she thinks]
Look, Tony, if that's what you think then...change it. Nothing wrong with change. Do whatever it is you think you need to do. I mean, you're Tony Stark. You can do whatever you want if you really try. Even if sometimes the rest of us wish you wouldn't.
no subject
I was just overseeing the leading.
[Totally harmless, right? Right. He smiles wryly at the answer, nodding slowly as he seems to come to a decision.]
You're right. Thanks, Carol. I'm going to sit Avengers business out for a while. I just need some time off, and like you said, you're able to handle things without me. I just wanted to be sure.
no subject
[Carol rolls her eyes, leaning just slightly into Tony's side]
That'll last a week. Then Godzilla will attack the city and you'll be right back out there, I bet.
no subject
Hey, I can last longer than that! I trust you guys to take care of things. You don't need me out there...
[He can't help it half the time, though. She's right. Usually something happens to draw him back in.]
